Finn whistles and cheers for Seattle, hooray!

Hey guys, Finn here!

Finn kicks straws goodbye in Seattle.jpg

Have you heard the good news?? Seattle just banned plastic straws! This is s exciting, and even historic, as they’re the first major U.S. city to pass this law!

Efforts of the #StopSucking campaign, headed by the Lonely Whale Foundation and For A Strawless Ocean, have led to this result after raising awareness of just how damaging plastic straws can be. For A Strawless Ocean estimates that around 71% of seabirds like Stephen, and 30% of turtles have plastic in their stomachs. They explain that straws, being so small and light, get sorted incorrectly by the mechanical recycling sorters, and end up with the regular trash.

The Lonely Whale Foundation led a campaign last September to reduce the use of single-use plastic straws, called Strawless in Seattle. 150 businesses participated, and it is estimated that 2.3 million straws were permanently removed from the city. 2.3 million! That’s more than the number of sunken ships in all the oceans!

Such good results were bound to get the attention of the lawmakers. I just hope it’s not long before the rest of the U.S. follows Seattle’s lead, and get this trash out of my home!

I’m gonna go tell the rest of the Shore Buddies the good news! Let’s give a cheer for Seattle!

Love,

Finn
