Turtles live in any climate that’s warm enough for them to complete a whole breeding cycle. Because of this, turtles live on every continent except Antarctica. North America has such a wide variety of turtle species, but Europe only has two species of turtles! Turtles spend most of their lives in water because they’ve adapted to aquatic life with webbed feet and aerodynamic shells. Sea turtles rarely leave the ocean, except to lay eggs on the shore, and freshwater turtles live in ponds and lakes, except to come out of the water to sun bathe. Even though most turtles can not tolerate cold climates well, there is a turtle species that has been seen swimming under ice when the Great Lakes freeze!
