A turtle’s shell has 60 different bones all connected together. The bony part is covered with plates made from the skin, which offer more strength and protection to the shell. Most turtles on land have high, domed carapaces that help protect them from the jaws of terrestrial predators. Carapaces are the top domed part of a turtle’s shell, and the bottom underlying part is the plastron. Did you know there is a turtle species that when threatened can wedge itself in narrow rocks and inflate itself with air, making extraction from the area nearly impossible. Aquatic turtles have more flat, aerodynamic shells. Having been here for more than 200 million years, credit must be partly due to their unique shell makeup.
